We discussed normal development in children in order to recognize abnormailties. Differences in ABCD according to adults in anatomy and physiology were discussed. Video’s of children in severe respiratoiry distress and failure were supportive to understand the theoretical lecture of respiratory distress. Since calculation of medication is very specific for the pediatric patient the participants completed a medication calculation test. The results were very good and helpful for them to test their competence  and knowledge on this subject. Participants also completed the written test for module 3 and the practical skill test in CPR, Airway management and ABCD scenario, all with good results.

Since most admissions of children in their ICU is due to trauma a lecture of pediatric trauma was provided. We discussed causes of trauma, injuries and treatment according to age and risk factors. Also intoxication of medication or certain poisoning agents are responsible for admission of children in ICU. We discussed that topic also. ABCDE approach is always leading in these lectures.

After 5 days of intensive training and working together all participants felt more competent and skilled in their future care of critically injured and sick children in their ICU. We closed this week with a lovely Egyptian breakfast in the class room and an extra test about the pediatric patient on ICU, this was not scheduled but on request of the participants. These 9 nurses surely were highly motivated!
